Uday Chopra to remake 'Bunty Aur Babli' for global audience

Bunty and Babli, the teenaged con artists of the 2005 Bollywood hit Bunty Aur Babli are headed to Hollywood, with filmmaker Uday Chopra planning to remake the film in Hollywood for a global audience with a re-written script.

Chopra, the youngest son of the renowned Bollywood producer-director Yash Chopra, has recently launched his family's film company Yash Raj Films in the US, with plans to produce Hollywood movies. He has already aligned himself as producer with two projects-Peter Glanz'sThe Longest Weekand Olivier Dahan'sGrace of Monaco. But he says he has also begun work on a Hollywood version of Bunty.

This will be the first time an intellectual property of a Bollywood film would be extended to Hollywood and be made into a global film after re-purposing the script. While another successful Bollywood producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has sold the rights of his hugely popular Munnabhai films to Hollywood studios, he will not be remaking the films himself. He has, however, retained the right to clear the re-purposed script.
If this model becomes successful, it could open the floodgates for Chopra who has a bouquet of IPRs of Yash Raj films, right from his father Yash Chopra's classics such as Kabhie, Kabhie, Kaala Patthar, Silsila, Chandni to Mashaal, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge to several modern day hits that include films made by his brothers and other directors under the Yash Raj banners, like Chak De India, Dhoom and Band Baaja, Baaraat.

YRF today operates in several verticals of the entertainment space-from film production, studios, digital space, music records and film distribution. Film industry sources, who did not want to be named, pegged YRF's turnover of around Rs 200 crore-Rs 250 crore, depending on the year's slate of films, as they form the largest chunk of the revenue flow. This year, since they have still not had a big film, the figure seems lower, next year with three big films--Salaman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger, SRK and Yash Chopra's next as well as Aamir Khan in Dhoom3, YRF's turnver could be much higher.
Filmed entertainment in India is expected to sustain the growth momentum witnessed in 2011 according to the KPMG Ficci Frames report of 2012 and the Indian film industry is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10.1% to touch Rs 15,000 crore in 2016.

Many Indian filmmakers have grown in size over the past few years and are now becoming ambitious enough to enter Hollywood. Apart from Chopra, a few privately held companies in production as well as post-production have launched themselves in the US, while big companies have forged joint ventures like Reliance Entertainment has with Steven Spielberg.

Chopra says he has much to gain because of the low cost model he can employ in the business. His idea right now is to make three films a year with an equity investment of $5-7 million (Rs 28 crore-Rs 39 crore, at Rs 56 to a $) in each project. "A small amount goes a long way in the US. It is all so structured and pre-sales can be encashed at banks to get you money. With $4-5 million, you can make a $25 million movie, if you got a good agent and a good script," he says.

He has employed a bunch of writers in Beverly Hills, who will re-purpose the script to suit Hollywood sensibilities. If he were to employ Writers Guild of America scriptwriters for a new script, he would have to shell out at least $70,000-$80,000 on each script. Re-purposing of course can come at a considerably lower cost, Chopra says.

Uday Chopra to direct films now

It seems Uday Chopra has finally discovered his ultimate dream. The actor-turned-writer is now gearing up to try his hand at direction. A director is all that he wants to be in life now.

As we told you earlier, the actor plans to quit acting after Dhoom 3 but he certainly doesn't want to swap all ties from the film world.

Uday is currently in Los Angeles learning filmmaking from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Uday confirms, "I've gone back to school. Yes you heard it right. I have enrolled in UCLA."

When asked about directing films for his home production Yash Raj Films, he said, "So many possibilities and yes direction is definitely one of them. Quitting acting doesn't mean I've quit films. I'll always be in the movie business but perhaps now more behind the scenes than in front."

We wish him good luck for his new career.

Uday Chopra to quit acting after Dhoom 3

He may not qualify as one of the biggest superstars in the country, but all said and done, he did manage to cut out a niche for himself. We're talking about none other than Uday Chopra. The younger son of the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra started his career with the superhit film Mohabbatein and though he didn't manage to strike gold with all his films at the Box Office, he delivered hits like Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai and blockbuster films Dhoom and Dhoom 2. The actor who is now all set to feature in Dhoom 3, however, has announced his retirement from acting.

Uday who is currently in Kansas tweeted earlier today, "Ok confession time...Dhoom 3 is my swan song...my last film...no I'm not giving up acting...quite the opposite, acting is giving up on me!"

Uday will be seen in Dhoom 3 along with Aamir Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.

Though YRF chose not to respond to this, it seems like Dhoom 3 will be Uday Chopra's last film as an actor.

Uday Chopra welcomes Aamir to Dhoom

Bollywood actor Uday Chopra, best remembered for his role as Ali in the Dhoom franchise, has extended a warm welcome to Aamir Khan, who is on board to play a baddie in its third edition. "Heres welcoming @aamir_khan to the Dhoom madness. Maybe he teaches us a few things or then again maybe we do (sic)," Uday posted on his Twitter page Saturday.

Aamir has come in after John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan respectively played the smart thief in the first and second movie of the franchise.

Uday and Abhishek Bachchan would continue to be the permanent feature in the franchise. While Uday plays Ali, Abhishek essays the role of inspector Jai Dixit.

Produced by Aditya Chopra, Dhoom 3 will be written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, popularly known as Victor. The movie's shooting will begin this year-end and it is slated for a 2012 Christmas release.

Uday Chopra turns director ?

Uday Chorpa (son of Yash Chopra and brother of Aditya Chopra) isn't ready to don the director's hat just yet, but the future looks promising. First and foremost he will most likely assist his brother during the making of the SRK-starred Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which will release on December 12th of this year. However, it seems quite likely that the youngest Chopra will take to direction in 2009 after trying his hand as an actor in Neal N' Nikki and the Dhoom series.

Uday Chopra and Tanisha to marry this year?

21 June 2007 (Sawf News) - Even before the dust settles on the controversy over the Aditya Chopra -Rani Mukherjee "roka" ceremony on Monday, there are reports that Yash Chopra's younger son Uday is all set to marry Tanisha, sister of Kajol and daughter of Tanuja.

After having failed to stir Bollywood with her roles in Sarkar (2005) and Neal 'N' Nikki (2006), Tanisha is probably reconciled to a lesser loftier goal in life.

While Yash Raj Films’ Neil n Nikki may have been an unmitigated flop, considered sleazy by many, it appears to have lit a spark between Uday and Tanisha.

Following the making of the film, news filtered out of the Chopra home that Uday and Tanisha were an item.

Accroding to the Mumbai Mirror, at the Abhi Ash wedding, Kajol and other friends started cajoling the couple to get married.

Uday and Tanisha are taking the thought seriously and an engagement could take place soon.
At the moment, Tanisha has no films on hand though Kumar Mangat is said to have penciled her in for a film with Upen Patel.

Uday Chopra has worked only in some films made by Yashraj Films.
