Tashan Opens To Below Average Response in overseas

Tashan is not upto the mark in the international markets. It has done poor business in North America and below average in other markets. The first three days business was 1.50 crore in UK, 1.25 crore in North America and the rest of the world added another 1.75 crore taking its total to 4.50 crore. Overall Tashan is well below expectations and is likely to do around 8-9 crores from overseas markets.

Tashan Struggles At The Box Office

Tashan managed to do nett gross business of 7.75 crore in its first two days. At this rate even a 20 crore opening nett total is looking a tough ask. The business over the first two days was around 70-80%.

Tashan's no show at the biggest multiplex chains like PVR, Fun, Cinemax, Inox, Fame and Adlabs has hit the film hard. There was hope that by Saturday it would be in the multiplexes like most of the other films that had similar problems but it was not to be and still the problem has not been sorted out.


Tashan needs the multiplex release to save it self being a losing fare, if the multiplexes and producers can sort out the problem and Tashan can get in the multiplexes from Friday it will show steady second week business if it does not happen then the expected blockbuster will actually emerge a flop.

The multiplex problem has hit business hard in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR and Bengal circuits with these circuits losing more than 50% business, other circuits have lost about 20-30%.

Tashan faces boycott

Tashan, Yash Chopra?s latest flick released today faces a complete blackout from India's multiplex companies.


This could result in a loss of Rs 15-20 crore for Yash Raj Films, Chopra?s production house, this weekend. It had spent Rs 35-40 crore to make the film.

Leading multiplex chains including PVR Cinemas, Adlabs, Shringar Cinemas, Inox Leisure and Cinemax have rejected Chopra's demand for 50 per cent (45 per cent in Mumbai and Delhi) of ticket sales in the first and second weeks of release as his share.

For other films, production houses charge 48 per cent for the first week and 45 per cent for the second week as their share.

As a result, the multiplexes have decided to black out the movie from their screens.

Industry estimates suggest that these five multiplexes constitute around 65-70 per cent of the cinema chains in India.

What has complicated matters further is that Chopra has set different revenue share terms for different territories.

Sanjeev Kohli, director & CEO of Yash Raj Films, said: ?We have not asked the multiplexes for any incremental terms from those concluded last year.

The terms being discussed are the same as those agreed upon for our last year?s films.? He added that as in the past, the production house will compensate the multiplexes if the film does not perform to expectation.

With five films set for a release this year, Yash Raj Films was looking at signing a bulk deal with the multiplexes.

These films are Tashan, animation flick Roadside Romeo, Bachna Ae Haseeno with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic with Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee and Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. However, the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer wasn't a part of the package.

Tashan Opens Well

Tashan opens well at 75-80% but well short of the expected bumper opening. The multiplex revenue sharing problem cropped up again giving the film more problems. The film has been trashed by critics but public reports are not as bad. Tashan will not emerge the expected blockbuster but still could emerge a hit if it does not crash on Monday and the multiplex problem is sorted as quick as possible.

Who walks away with Kareena Kapoor in ‘Tashan’ -- Saif Ali Khan or Akshay Kumar?

Well, we can share the climax with you. Contrary to public expectations Akshay, and not Saif, walks away with Kareena eventually. Interestingly, it was during the shooting of this film that cupid struck Kareena and Saif.

Our well-placed source in the industry says, “Some select people from the industry have seen the film and they were quite surprised at the climax. It is clear towards three-fourths of the film that Saif will not get Kareena in the end, yet the viewers found it surprising. The surprise basically stemmed from the fact that Saif and Kareena make the hottest couple in town today; so the viewers felt sort of cheated when Saif loses Kareena.”

Does Kareena not love Saif in the film? Our source adds, “Kareena has excellent chemistry with Saif until the interval, but post-interval she switches her affection to Akshay.”

Why? “During the course of the film, Kareena learns from Akshay that he is her ''bachpan ka pyaar'. So the childhood lovers get together,” our source explains.

And what about Anil Kapoor? What is he doing in the film? “Anil plays a don, Bhaiyaji, who enjoys killing people as much as he loves enjoying speaking English. Saif and Kareena work with Anil, but Kareena steals a large amount of money and runs away. Saif is with her in her journey. Then, Anil hires Akshay to track down Saif and Kareena and get them back to him. As for the end as far as Anil is concerned, he is killed,” our source further reveals.

Tashan is produced by Yash Raj Films and is set to hit the theatres on April 25. Apart from Akshay, Kareena, Saif and Anil, the film, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, also stars Sanjay Mishra and Yashpal Sharma. While Akshay goes by the name Bachchan Pande in the film, Saif is called Jimmy and Kareena plays Pooja. Vaibhavi Merchant (who has now become a Yashraj favourite) is the choreographer and Aki Narula has designed the clothes. The music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar.

Finally.... YRF reveals TASHAN video

Those who were waiting to see some action happening for TASHAN can now heave a sigh of relief.

With less than 3 weeks to go for the release of the film, the producers of TASHAN, Yash Raj Films, have decided to unleash a song on the music channels. The number in question is 'Chhalia' which is picturised on Kareena Kapoor. This comes after close to 3 weeks of the film's promotion that so far was content with 10-second teasers from the film's songs with just the signature tune playing in the background.

However, with 'Chhalia', audience finally get a chance to hear what Vishal-Shekhar's music is all about in this film which looks and sounds as unconventional and still so commercial as it can. While it is fun to watch Kareena gyrate to some sensual moves in 'Chhalia', now one looks forward to witness the best two tracks from TASHAN -'Di Laara Re' and 'Dil Dance Maare'.

Akshay is insecure about Saif

Guess what's the latest talk of the town? Khiladi, Akshay Kumar is showing severe signs of 'jealously' and feeling 'insecure' about the way his role has shaped up in Tashan. Post Race , Saif's career has grown in leaps and bounds and he longer wants to second fiddle to anyone, least of all to Akshay Kumar who always had the best of roles written on him.

But this time, post Race , the tables have turned and it's Saif who is racing ahead of his contemporaries selling like a hot cake everywhere. And now sensing Saif and Kareena's popularity the makers of Tashan have cut special promos of the couple and are planning to air them separately.

"Akshay has a solo promo on air, so has Saif, but now, Yashraj wants to cash on the popularity of Saif and Kareeena and so they have cut a special promo of the couple and this has obviously affected Akshay. Apparently it hasn't gone down too well with Akshay and he reportedly had a tiff with the producer Adtiya Chopra," says a unit member.

But Akshay has to eat humble pie, since Aditya stood his ground and refused to listen to his list of demands, which includes, downplaying Saif's role and cutting down on his promos. And for Saif it's a big 'kick' to his career, especially for someone who started his career by playing 'sidekick' to Akshay in films like Main Khiladi Tu Aanari .

But Saif on his part refused to acknowledge his rivalry with Akshay "I bow to Akshay Kumar, he deserves every bit of his success, he has really worked hard and I'm genuinely happy for him," says Saif.

Is Kareena two timing Saif?

TASHAN has been a cynosure of the eyes right from day one. It was TASHAN who brought Bebo closer to Chote Nawab and cut off from Shahid.

TASHAN is enjoying the glare of publicity from the shooting phase itself. Right from its making days, it has been known that Kareena is paired opposite Saif in TASHAN. Incidentally, it was on the sets of TASHAN that the two fell in love, and they have been inseparable ever since. The then movie stills and media talks about TASHAN's reel life pair Saif-Kareena added salt and pepper to their off-screen love story. It also gave an obvious indication that Kareena will romance with Saif (only) on screen in TASHAN.

Now looking at the latest promos of soon to be released and much-awaited TASHAN, it appears that Bebo may romance Akki (Akshay Kumar) also on screen. Trailers denote that Kareena may perhaps play a two-timer and double cross real life beau in reel life.

Kareena’s no bikini show in Tashan

Not long back Kareena Kapoor hit the headlines that she is into strict diet regime to cut her size to zero to look hotter and sexier in two piece suit in Tashan. The latest about her bikini story is that she is not wearing any bikini in Tashan and the story is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

In an interview, Bebo remarks on her bikini scene that she is not wearing any sexy attire in Tashan and it is just a rumor. A person close to Yashraj films also ruled out Bebo’s bikini in Tashan and said that it is only a publicity gimmick. Kareena will only be seen in short pants. No doubt Bebo will look hot in shorts too. The running promos proved that Bebo in her new make over is looking stunning.

Tashan is very close to Kareena as she had started her journey of love with Saif on its set. Saif proposed to her at a candlelight dinner during the days of Tashan. The film had gained much hype due to Kareena’s bikini rumor, Saif-Kareena's pairing, Bebo’s slim and trim look and last but not the least due to the Yashraj tag. The film also stars Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor in the lead role.

Akki made bakra

The Tashan unit played a prank on the actor by making him re-do an uncomfortable scene

Akshay Kumar plays local goon, Bachchan Pande, in the Yash Raj film Tashan. We are told that Akshay’s character, the most colourful of the cast, speaks in a trademark lingo throughout the film. Apart from his language and attire, Akshay has worked hard to give Bachchan Pande a raw edge.

Bakra bait

A source from the sets of the film reveals how the actor’s efforts to stay true to his character made him a bakra. We are told that during the shoot of the song Dil Dance Maare Re, he was asked to give a shot which needed him to grab his crotch; similar to Michael Jackson’s trademark move. The scene can be seen in the promos of the film on air.

During the shoot in Ladakh, the crew decided to play a prank on Akshay. A source spills the beans, “Akshay was given the brief on the steps by choreographer Vaibhavi (Merchant). The song is full of masti and has raunchy lyrics. He was told that for the opening shots of the song he had to stand with his back to a truck and grab his crotch.” Akki agreed because it went with the character.

Late current

The Khiladi did the scene, but was told that the take wasn’t good enough, “What Akshay didn’t know was that they were pulling a fast one on him. It was hilarious to see him grab his crotch over and over again. Everyone from the extras to the dancers were in splits.”

As the retakes kept increasing, Akshay realised something was fishy. “That’s when they told him they were pulling his leg. However he was quite the sport and laughed off the incident.”

TASHAN songs not on air - A good move?

In their endeavor to come up with different kind of marketing strategy for their films, they are in experimental mood yet again. And this time around it happens for their most critical project since many months - TASHAN - which is up for release in barely three weeks from now.

In order to create an intrigue quotient for the music of TASHAN, YRF is refraining from showcasing the songs on the music channels. So what one sees is just a 10 second glimpse of the song with the signature tune of the track playing in the background. There is not a single word to be heard and the promo ends sooner than it begins.

Now it definitely makes sense if this is a part of the initial set of promos for a film. However, when it appears to be the case for weeks in succession, it certainly raises the alarm bells. After all majority of music lovers are appreciating the music of TASHAN (which released last weekend) and them being deprived of seeing it on the small screen (at least for the moment) is not been taken kindly.

The curiosity value which is being created due to this unique strategy is all fine for a diehard Bollywood fan but an average cine goer, who decides to watch a film after watching the promos, is certainly expected to be left wanting. Also, it appears to be unfair to the composer duo of Vishal and Shekhar who now seem set to gauge audience reaction only after the songs are seen along with the film's theatrical release.

In an age when music promotion of any biggie begins close to 2 months before the release of the film, TASHAN is going ahead with controlled publicity even though there are only about 20 days to go for this biggie to hit the screens.

Looking at this, one does question if this is indeed a right move by YRF to be holding back on airing the songs?

'Tashan' music preview, check it out!

There's less than a month to go till the release of Yash Raj Films' Tashan which promises to be a masala action entertainer starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

With composers Vishal-Shekhar at the helm of the music, one can expect a rocking score after the work they did in last year's Om Shanti Om. Is Saif apprehensive about Kunal Kohli's next?

Basking in the big initial success of RACE, actor Saif Ali Khan is not unduly worried about the lackadaisical promotion of his next film, TASHAN. Saif explains that he does not experience the same kind of anxiety for TASHAN, as he felt for RACE because TASHAN is associated with a top banner like Yash Raj, who are the best in the field of entertainment.

Interesting as it may sound, but there is another project which Saif is a bit apprehensive about and that is Kunal Kohli's next with Rani Mukherjee. Yes, it�s the same film where Rani plays a fairy. Saif says that he is very anxious to see how the audience would like him in that role, which according to Saif is very close to his heart. He adds that he loves his cool role, 'not MARY POPPINS kind, but very it'!

Very tongue-in-cheek Saif quips that Kunal Kohli is not finalizing the title of his film on purpose. The reason is that Kunal wants the film to be known as a Kunal Kohli production (his first), for as long as possible! The film is being presented by Yash Raj Films.

Tashan Promotion Late Due To Race

Tashan which is to be released in five weeks time has had no music release yet and the publicity campaign has not taken off with just an initial teaser doing the rounds.

The reason for this is the similarity of Tashan and Race, the promos that were expected to come for Tashan would give the feeling that the film is similar to Race so different promos have been made which will hit the television screens soon. The films may be different but posters and promos may have made the two films look similar so YRF have made changes to their publicity campaign.

TASHAN music - Hot and much anticipated

Yash Raj Films didn't have a great 2007 when it came to music of their films.

Barring JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM that had some foot tapping music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy and made some impact in the charts, neither AAJA NACHLE [Salim Sulaiman] nor LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG [Shantanu Moitra] worked. TA RA RUM PUM [Vishal and Shekhar] and CHAK DE INDIA [Salim Sulaiman] were moderate successes but none lived up to the legacy of Yash Raj Films. All of this makes TASHAN an exceedingly important project for the production house that opens its account with this actioner in 2008.

Vishal Dadlani chuckles, "Even if we say this to ourselves, TASHAN is a 'dhamaal' score in the offering. Shekhar and I are supremely confident about the music and we are sure music lovers won't be disappointed at all. It has the 'dhinchaak' element that is associated with the genre of a film like TASHAN.

Music lovers too are looking forward to the film's music. Says Shalini Burman (Branch Manager with a Delhi based bank) - "Frankly speaking, I was a tad disappointed with TA RA RUM PUM since it was more of a Yash Raj score than Vishal & Shekhar. When I play music composed by the duo, I expect a JHANKAAR BEATS or a MUSAFIR or a DUS, something which brings to fore their own style. I hope TASHAN has a lot more of them."

I was never on a drastic diet: Kareena

Kareena Kapoor has denied the report published in a Mumbai tabloid that she collapsed on the sets of Tashan owing to a crash diet.

At an event to promote a hair removing cream for which she is the brand ambassador, she revealed, “I know some newspaper carried the story but I would like to make it clear that I have never been on a drastic diet.”

Explaining how she managed to tone down her body so much, she said, “I worked very hard during training. Bharat Thakur is the one person who is responsible for this. His yoga institute has completely sculptured my body and I have eaten everything the way I wished to eat.”

Agreeing that she had decided to reduce weight for the film, she added, "I had done it to get a specific look in the film but now I’m back to my normal looks and weight. I never found any need to be on diet.”

Kareena also shared her health gyaan at the event. “What helps me stay in good shape is that I’m a pure vegetarian. I don’t put non vegetarian food in my stomach to increase unnecessary weight. Moreover, on regular basis I drink 8 to 10 glasses of water and also have green vegetables and healthy food. It not only reflects on skin which glows but also strengthens your hair. Nowadays at the age of 25 you can become a diabetic so it’s most important to be healthy and see to it that your regular diet has more vitamins and minerals in it,” she concludes.

Sreejita De with Akshay in Tashan

Sreejita De, who plays the chef in Star One's Annu Ki Hogayee Wah Bhai Wah is not new to facing cameras! For the uninitiated, the young and talented girl will be seen sharing screen space with Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Akshay Kumar in the soon to be released Tashan. Sreejita, a student of Mass Media was earlier seen in Ekta's Karam Apna Apna and Kasauti Zindagi Kay, in not so important roles.

Sreejita says, "I always wanted to play some substantial role and when I was short listed for DJ's new show Annu, I was very elated and felt very encouraged. The concept is very offbeat, yet people can relate to the situation through which Annu and her family go through". Looking forward to see Annu with Akki in Tashan!

Akki axed from Tashan promos

Akshay Kumar is miffed with Yash Raj Films for not giving him as much exposure as Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the Tashan promos. If sources are to be believed, the promos will singularly focus on Saif and Kareena.

It is only natural that Yash Raj Films is cashing in big time on the Saif-Kareena pairing, for their big ticket hit. However, it looks like there is another reason for Akshay being pushed out of the picture. We hear that Akshay had recently turned down a Yash Raj film, thus rubbing the Chopras the wrong way.

A source close to the production house says, “It’s true that Akshay turned down a Yash Raj film and the Chopras did not take it too well.” Adds the source, “After watching Akshay’s performance in Tashan, the Chopras wanted him to star in another project of theirs. However, he was not entirely convinced with the story and turned it down.”

The source further says, “Aditya believes that because of Yash Raj’s Dil To Pagal Hai , Akshay got a new image. Sadly, Akshay’s decision caught him off-guard.” We sent a text message to Akshay but he remained unavailable for comment.

TASHAN promos from next week

The first promo of Yashraj Films' upcoming action extravaganza, TASHAN, was included in the reels of their last release, AAJA NACHLE. Just that single trailor (which we had discussed in detail), which concluded with Anil saying, "First impression is last impression", seems to have worked like magic and was enough to build a tremendous hype around the film. And if that was not enough, an unlikely source, the posters of the movie (in cinemas) are taking the curiosity to dizzying heights. A proof of that is the high number of enquiries at the theatres where these hoardings have been displayed. So what's the latest on TASHAN?

As per our trade and exhibition sources, Yashraj Films is all set to launch a publicity blitzkrieg for the film, with the tag line- 'The Ishtyle... The Good Luck... The Pharmoola' from the first week of March, followed by a quick audio release.

Vijay Krishna Acharya's TASHAN, forecasted/projected as one of the biggest openers of the year by the trade is all set to hit the screens on 25th April 2008 and is likely to be the only major release of the week.
