Yash Chopra eyes tier II cities

Yash Chopra eyes tier II cities

Filmmaker Yash Chopra, whose Yash Raj Films has just secured a higher share of the revenue from theatres in big cities, has now turned his attention to tier II cities, where he is said to be asking for even more.

Armed with a reputation to deliver hits consistently, this week struck a deal with movie exhibitors under which his company will get 50 per cent of the revenue earned through ticket sales in the first week, 45 per cent in the second and 40 per cent in the third.

For the tier II cities, according to industry sources, Chopra is demanding 60, 55 and 50 per cent of the ticket sales in the first, second and third weeks, respectively.

"We have signed on with the production house for all the forthcoming movies under the Yash Raj Films banner,” said Cinemax general manager (marketing & sales) Devang Sampat about the arrangement in the big cities.

However, most of the major multiplexes have closed the five-movie deal the production house proposed but only in certain cities. They still haven't reached a deal for exhibiting films in tier II cities like Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Aurangabad, Indore, etc.

Multiplex owners hope to reach an agreeable revenue-share arrangement before the weekend.

"Inox has signed on with Yash Raj Films till year end on terms put forth by the production house. However, this is true only for Inox properties in Maharashtra," said Shrikanth Hazare, vice president - marketing, Inox.

The theatre chain is still negotiating with the production house for its properties in Indore, Kolkata, Banglore and Chennai. PVR Cinema and Shringar Cinemas faces a similar dilemma.

While Shringar Cinemas' spokesperson refused to comment, PVR Cinema's COO-films cell, Ashish Saxena said, "We have agreed on Yash Raj Films' revenue sharing proposition and have closed the deal for our properties in North India. But, PVR is in talks to finalise deals for tier II cities. We hope to close the deal soon."

After TRRP, YRF scare continues with JBJ

After TRRP, YRF scare continues with JBJ

It has been happening with each of the biggies coming from the house of Yash Raj Films.

After FANAA, DHOOM 2 and now TA RA RUM PUM, the trend of no major film coming around the release date of a YRF project continues with JHOOM BARAABAR JHOOM too. Though till around a month back, all major films steered clear of coming anywhere close to TRRP's release date of April 27, as per the latest developments at least KYA LOVE STORY HAI is playing a gamble and making an exception by arriving just a week before the film. On the other hand, there is also a probability that Raj Kanwar's RAQEEB may come on May 04.

Similar courage is still expected from film makers planning their releases around mid-June due to the confirmed release date of JHOOM BARAABAR JHOOM
being June 15. The result is that the slots for June 8 and June 22 are still lying vacant with not a single film maker daring to bring his/her film anywhere close to JBJ.

The YRF scare continues!

Rakesh Roshan wants to build up his production house on the lines of Yash Raj Films

Roshan Sr is producing Krazzy 4, which goes onto the floors in July, under his banner Filmkraft and this one will be directed by one of Roshan’s assistants. This is the first film that Rakesh is not directing ever since he took up direction with Kaho Naa Pyar Hai (2007).

“Raja Sen, who assisted me in Kaho Naa..., Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish, will be directing it. Raja is a very good and capable director.I will also be involved as a producer in each and every department of the film. Ashwini Dheer (Office Office) is the screenplay and dialogue writer of Krazzy 4,” says Roshan.

Rakesh Roshan wants to build up his production house and experiment with different films; on the lines of Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts and Yash Raj Films, “We have to expand as a production house. New and exciting projects are coming up and audience tastes are changing.

I am excited about Krazzy 4. It’s very different from what my banner usually produces. It’s an out and out comedy with a social message and is a wholesome commercial entertainer, which will appeal to every section of society.

Krazzy 4 is based around all the four characters played by Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Suresh Menon and Rajpal Yadav who form the crazy foursome.

Dia Mirza, Juhi Chawla and Rajat Kapoor form very important and pivotal elements of the rest of the cast. I have very good actors in the film.”

YRF's Kohli makes presentation on Bollywood

By Businessofcinema.com Team

MUMBAI: Yash Raj Films CEO Sanjeev Kohli represented the Indian film industry at the Forum for International Business 2007 held in Zurich, Switzerland. Incidentally, it was Yash Raj Films that introduced Switzerland and its beautiful locales to Indian cinema.

Kohli made a presentation on Bollywood and its economic and cultural impact on the world. Erstwile American vice president Al Gore was also one of the speakers at this international forum, amongst others.

Yash Raj Films and Switzerland share a special relationship for the past few years. Infact, the Swiss Government has honoured Yash Chopra for helping rediscover Switzerland and he was presented a special Award by screen goddess, Ursula Andress on behalf of the Swiss Government. A lake in Switzerland has been unofficially named ‘The Chopra Lake’ because of the way he has used it in films.

This conference not only played an important role in further strengthening the close ties between the two countries, but also aptly demonstrated the impact of the Indian Film Industry on the world.

YRF - Jugal Hansraj film titled ROADSIDE ROMEO?

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 09, 2007]

Is the directorial debut of Jugal Hansraj titled ROADSIDE ROMEO?

That's the speculation going around the town ever since news came in that actor Jugal Hansraj has been roped in by Yash Raj Films to direct their first ever animation film. Another highlight of this film is that it won't be based on human beings but, hold your breath, dogs! Hence the title ROADSIDE ROMEO!

To add spice to the flavor, there are also rumors of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor being roped in to give voiceover for the two dogs who are the prime protagonists in the film.

Will there be an official confirmation soon?

‘Bridget Jones Diary’ praises Yash Raj Studios

Says Gaurav Chopraa, who played a small part of a journalist with Leonardo Di Caprio in ‘Blood Diamond’, “I met the producer of ‘Bridget Jones Diary’ and he was all praise for the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai. Leonardo, too, kept expressing his fascination about the song dance sequences in our films. That is how much our cinematic culture has travelled, thus creating a constant curiosity about our artistes in Hollywood.”

ECKLL avoids clash with TRRP

Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, April 09, 2007]

TA RA RUM PUM wave is on and the first flick to avoid the clash and move ahead to a latter day is EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL.

People associated with the film are honest enough to acknowledge that the first Yash Raj Films' offering of the year is a huge enough competition. Our source clearly states that it would be nothing sort of suicidal for ECKLL to be arriving so close to the Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer.

Originally slated for an April 20 release, a week before TRRP takes over screens across the country, EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL would now be arriving on either May 11 or 18.

Says our source, "There was no point for the film to come on April 20. The team had earlier designed its release strategy for April but then as things stand, TRRP would be arriving like a storm and would occupy all multiplex screen space across the country. ECKLL does have its strengths but then it is more of a word of mouth film which starts consolidating a place for itself from second week onwards. What's the point to bring on the film on April 20 only to find itself running at some odd places in Mumbai suburbs once TRRP arrives?"

TRRP has a reality show angle woven in

Jognder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network

So far India has seen only one film with an element of a reality show built into it -little known HUM DUM that marked the debut of Anjana Sukhani.

A few years since the release of HUM DUM, Yash Raj Films has set a bigger stage for the game show to be interspersed with the lives of the lead protagonists in their upcoming venture TA RA RUM PUM. Starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee as the screen couple blessed with two delightful kids, TRRP directed by Siddharth Anand tells the tale of their survival amidst all the adversities.

In the film there arrives a juncture when the family has a journey down from riches to the rags and are forced to survive with minimal resources available.

In an attempt to hide the truth from their small children and live on life with hopes and pleasant moments, Saif and Rani create a fake world of a reality show for their children that involves living in poor conditions and still survive the challenges that come due to it.

Oblivious of truth, the children are more than a game (pun intended) to join the struggle and together the family comes out as a winner!

Saif and Kareena are happy to be dogs for YRF

Bollywood Tarde News Network

If insider news has to be believed, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor would soon be turning into dogs in an upcoming venture!

Don't rub your eyes in disbelief because this is what the reports indicate as the two do this for none other than YASH RAJ FILMS.

Well, let us break the suspense here. Saif and Kareena are not literally turning into dogs but would be providing voiceovers for two dogs in the production house's upcoming animation film. Yet untitled, the film with dogs as the central characters is an Aditya Chopra production that would also see Jugal Hansraj making his debut as a director.

Now one waits to see the cute little chat between Saif and Kareena as they play some dog games out their behind the mikes!

After HUM TUM, animation reaches next level in TRRP

Remember the adorable characters HUM and TUM in Saif Ali Khan-Rani Mukherjee starrer HUM TUM?

The two worked perfectly fine in taking the narrative of the movie forward. Now Yash Raj Films' next offering TA RA RUM PUM has taken a cue from their own successful formula and gone a level up by incorporating an entire track featuring animated characters.

Well, this not all as this time around the track also intersperses entire TRRP family comprising of Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherjee and their two lovely kids!

An out and out animated number that is as flawless as it can get, whether it is Hollywood or Bollywood, the title song 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' features a bear family of 4 that dances along and makes merry with the TRRP family.

Watch out for it and you would surely be smiling along all the way!

Director Yash Chopra will return with a romantic film (what else?)

Alaka Sahani - Indian Express

Mumbai, April 2: Master of love, filmmaker Yash Chopra is ready to don the director’s cap again. Though he is yet to zero in on a script and cast, his fans can be sure of one thing—it will be a romantic film. With this, Chopra will end the three-year break he has taken from direction, after Veer Zaara in 2004.

Chopra, who makes mushy like no one else can and has become an icon in the genre, doesn’t want to deviate from his favourite stories. “There is no explaining why I love romantic films,” he smiles. “Similarly I can’t say why I love seeing my heroines in white. I love exploring human relations,” adds the veteran.

Of course we haven’t forgotten the action/ family film Deewar that consolidated Amitabh Bachchan as an angry young man, also came from his stable. “That’s so long back. I have switched to making romantic films long ago and have stuck to that.”

However, Bollywood’s favourite dream-maker seems to be taking it a little easy lately, and handed over the reins of Yash Raj Films to his (very talented) filmmaker son Aditya. “The younger generation has to take over. Aditya is looking after the creative side of the production house and doing a good job of it. But, of course, when my film goes to the floors, I will be closely monitoring its production,” he offers.

Five films—Ta Ra Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Chak De India, Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachale—from the Chopra factory will be released this year alone. Though they have generated quite a lot of interest already, Chopra dismisses that other production houses have anything to fear. “We are releasing only five films this year while more than 200 films are made in Bollywood every year. I don’t think we are a threat to anyone,” he laughs.

On signing a number of upcoming filmmakers, he says, “New talent will bring new sensibilities in films.”
