Director Yash Chopra will return with a romantic film (what else?)

Mumbai, April 2: Master of love, filmmaker Yash Chopra is ready to don the director’s cap again. Though he is yet to zero in on a script and cast, his fans can be sure of one thing—it will be a romantic film. With this, Chopra will end the three-year break he has taken from direction, after Veer Zaara in 2004.

Chopra, who makes mushy like no one else can and has become an icon in the genre, doesn’t want to deviate from his favourite stories. “There is no explaining why I love romantic films,” he smiles. “Similarly I can’t say why I love seeing my heroines in white. I love exploring human relations,” adds the veteran.

Of course we haven’t forgotten the action/ family film Deewar that consolidated Amitabh Bachchan as an angry young man, also came from his stable. “That’s so long back. I have switched to making romantic films long ago and have stuck to that.”

However, Bollywood’s favourite dream-maker seems to be taking it a little easy lately, and handed over the reins of Yash Raj Films to his (very talented) filmmaker son Aditya. “The younger generation has to take over. Aditya is looking after the creative side of the production house and doing a good job of it. But, of course, when my film goes to the floors, I will be closely monitoring its production,” he offers.

Five films—Ta Ra Rum Pum, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Chak De India, Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachale—from the Chopra factory will be released this year alone. Though they have generated quite a lot of interest already, Chopra dismisses that other production houses have anything to fear. “We are releasing only five films this year while more than 200 films are made in Bollywood every year. I don’t think we are a threat to anyone,” he laughs.

On signing a number of upcoming filmmakers, he says, “New talent will bring new sensibilities in films.”
