SRK back in Yash’s Raaj

In a bid to change the tide, Yash Raj Films has signed on the superstar for its next, which will either be directed by head honcho Yash Chopra or his son Aditya.

Given their recent records, Yash Raj Films (YRF) is now trying to salvage its reputation of being one of the most successful and prestigious production houses in Bollywood. A lot of their recent projects bombed at the box office but they haven’t let that dampen their spirits.

After offering Dhoom 3 to Aamir Khan (he will start reading the script around October 15), YRF has now got another box-office winner, Shah Rukh Khan to work on one of its forthcoming films.

The last YRF film with King Khan, which Yash Chopra directed himself, was Veer Zaara (2004), a box office success. The production house is counting a lot on the success of its forthcoming project with the actor. This film will either be directed by YRF head honcho Yash Chopra or his son Aditya.

A source says, “YRF is yet to decide who will direct the Shah Rukh starrer. SRK has very good relations with both, Yashji and Aditya. He has equal faith in both of them. They are like family to him.”

And interestingly, it may seem as though SRK has proved lucky for the production house, as most of the films the actor has done with them have been successful at the box office, with the exception of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008).

While the lead actor has been finalised, the position of the heroine opposite Shah Rukh still remains open.


Apparently, the SRK starrer for YRF will go on floors in 2011. So, next year, Shah Rukh, who will start shooting for Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2, will thus be shooting for at least two films. This will obviously be quite a change from his usual habit of shooting for only one film a year.

When contacted, the YRF spokesperson said, “We are still working on our slate for the coming year and will make our announcements at the appropriate time on the finalisation of our projects.”

History repeats itself with Band Baaja Baarat

Anushka Sharma, who made her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, would be seen on the big screen yet again in Band Baaja Baaraat. This fun flick coming from the house of 'Yash Raj Films' releases all over on December 10.

However, call it sheer coincidence or a part of the plan but the fact remains that history would be repeating itself for the pretty girl. This is because Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi too had come around the same time when it released on December 12, 2008.

Says a trade observer, "This should be one lucky coincidence for the makers and Anushka here. After all Anushka has been enjoying a good innings so far in Bollywood. Her first film was a blockbuster while Badmaash Company, which was again a YRF production and had released earlier this year, was also an average success. She would well be looking at making a hat trick with Band Baaja Baaraat."

YRF's Band Baaja Baaraat to release on December 10

Yash Raj Films' next Band Baajaa Baaraat starring Anushka Sharma and debutant Ranveer Singh is all set for release on December 10th this year. The film is produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by newcomer Maneesh Sharma (who was an Associate Director on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi). The music has been composed by talented duo Salim-Sulaiman.

Debutant Ranveer Singh, a complete fresher with no modelling or acting experience, was selected after his very first audition, having impressed Aditya Chopra instantly.

Band Baajaa Baaraat is the story of Shruti (Anushka) and Bittoo (Ranveer) who are just out of Delhi University. A chance and inopportune meeting brings them together to reluctantly start a tumultuous entrepreneurial venture as Wedding Planners. Their business enters the ups and downs of the lavish world of the glamour and glitz of Delhi baaraats and weddings that will test their friendship over time.

This is Anushka's third film with YRF after Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Badmaash Company.

Aamir Khan to star in 'Dhoom 3'?

A certain section of the media is spreading stories about Aamir rejecting Yash Raj Film's offer to work as a villain in Dhoom 3. Aamir, we hear is disturbed that these negative stories might lead to a fallout with the Yash Raj camp, and this does not suit his professional plans. So, Aamir is strongly refuting the news that he was approached for the film.

Recent reports suggest that Aamir was approached for Dhoom 3, which was to be directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. But our inside sources have another story to tell.

They said: "Aamir Khan was definitely approached by the prestigious banner but it was with the script of a romantic comedy and not Dhoom 3. Aamir had liked the subject. Yash Raj Films had planned to take the film on floors by October 2010. However, Aamir eventually declined the offer because he didn't want to begin shooting for it so early in October. Aamir, as we all know, is on a break and is not signing or shooting for any film till his home production Dhobi Ghaat-directed by wife Kiran Rao-releases in February 2011. Yash Raj is in a hurry to start working on the film and has been in talks with many A-list actors for the project."

Flops made Shahid choosy

After having seen duds back to back Shahid Kapoor is little picky about not only his films but also the directors. He has lately refused to do Shaad Ali’s film. Ali too has seen a flop with Jhoom Barabar Jhoom in past but has given hits like Saathiya and Bunty Aur Bubly to the Yash Raj Films banner.

Later he had gone back to assisting his mentor Mani Ratnam for Raavan. Unfortunately, after the latest failure followed with Raavan’s failure has shaken the actors’ faith in the director and so when he is looking forward to cast stars in his upcoming Yash Raj banner film, he is facing trouble.

The film is actually a three hero project made under Yashraj banner. When Shaad approached Shahid for one of the roles, the actor did not show any interest in doing the film and didn’t even revert back. Shaad is hurt and is launching three new faces in the film.

Jugal Hansraj’s third innings

He attracted the audience with his sweet, chocolate boy looks and light eyes as an actor in ‘Masoom’ (as a child artist) and ‘Mohabattein’ (as a lover-boy). But sadly the charming Jugal Hansraj failed to grab the attention with his directorial ventures.

His earlier attempts ‘Roadside Romeo’ and ‘Pyaar Impossible’ didn’t make much impression, but still Jugal is not the one who will lose his heart. It is said that the actor-director is giving a yet another try to filmmaking. And supporting him is Aditya Chopra, who given Jugal a film under his banner Yash Raj Films.

Sources say that the Jugal is in fact has written a script and Aditya has approved it.

Kat to work with Kabir

Kabir Khan, the director who made the hit New York with Katrina Kaif may work with her again. New York had given Katrina a much needed platform to show her skills as an actress. She received critical acclaim for her performance.

The film was a success at the box office as well. Recently, the director and his muse were spotted having dinner at a plush joint in Andheri, a suburb of Mumbai. An eyewitness revealed, “Katrina Kaif and Kabir Khan were engrossed in a discussion. The actress looked absolutely gorgeous in a black top and blue jeans, hair pulled back in a ponytail with no make-up, while Kabir was casually dressed. From their body language, it was obvious that Kabir and Kats share a warm rapport and they looked very comfortable with each other as they chatted away.”

Interestingly, Ayaan Mukherjee, the director of Wake Up Sid, was seated close by. When Katrina spotted him, she rushed to him and pulled his cheeks. After that, the three of them got together and chatted away like old friends.

Can we hope that all this camaraderie will bring on another good performance from Katrina?

Reliance Retail-Yashraj in JV for expansions

Recently, India’s leading Industrialist Mukesh Ambani, CMD, Reliance Industries has forayed in the reel world by tieing up with Yashraj Films.

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Retail and Yashraj Films may float a 74:26 JV to develop multiplexes, run entertainment channels and produce soap operas for television. The new company formed out of this Joint Venture would work out upcoming malls of Reliance Retail nationwide to bring more multiplexes.

“I love watching Bollywood movies and Yash Chopra is one of my favourite filmmakers. I have always believed that he has a Midas touch”, said Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries. The plans are to invest around Rs 200 crores in the new venture.

Aamir Khan to replace Hrithik in Dhoom 3?

Aamir Khan's to replace Hrithik in Dhoom 3? Actor Aamir Khan has finally confirmed that he might soon be working in Yash Chopra's next big venture.

"Yes I am in discussions with Yash Raj, but but will sign or not sign after I come back from the Toronto Film Festival," Aamir said.

It looks like it's going to be a case of Aamir Khan and the kingdom of Dhoom. Aamir Khan might soon be replacing Hrithik Roshan in Dhoom 3.

If all goes well, the two powerhouses will be finally coming together after a cold war that spanned several years.

The mutual admiration society has been developing over the last couple of months with Aamir making it a point to include the Yash Raj camp in most of his social gatherings.

But its not just the Chopras that Aamir is keen to work with, the actor is also looking forward to working with Academy award winning director Danny Boyle.

With the best of Bollywood and Hollywood knocking at Aamir's door, the actor certainly is creating quite a dhoom all of his own.

'Band Baja Baraat' is my best film till date: Anushka

Model-turned-actress Anushka Sharma just can't stop grinning about her role as a wedding planner in her upcoming film 'Band Baja Baraat' and has termed it her best film till date.

Anushka made her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' and then went on to star in 'Badmaash Company' as a feisty urban girl opposite Shahid Kapoor.

The 22-year-old beauty stars opposite debutante Ranvir Singh in the Yash Raj Films' 'Band Baja Baraat' helmed by Maneesh Sharma, who worked as an assistant director on 'Rab Ne..'.

"I play a wedding planner in the film. It's a story about two Delhi University students who pass out from college and how they come together and start the business of wedding planning, in areas like Janakpuri. It's my best and favourite film till date," said Anuskha, who was in the capital recently for a fashion event.

Colors acquires TV rights for 'Lafangey Parindey'

Hindi entertainment channel Colors has acquired the television rights of Yash Raj Films' latest release "Lafangey Parindey".

This is the first such deal between the channel and the production house.

The deal will give a push to the increasing association of Bollywood and the TV industry, says Gaurav Gandhi, Group CCO - Viacom 18 Group and head of international business.

"Colors has always been a trend-setter in bridging the gap between the two screens. With this association with YRF, we have taken a step further in bringing together properties which share a common theme of identifying and encouraging the real Indian talent," Gandhi said in a press release.

As part of the deal, the channel will also promote the film on their show "India's Got Talent - Khoj 2".

In the film, Neil Nitin Mukesh plays a boxer who fights blindfolded and Deepika Padukone essays a visually challenged girl who has mastered the art of dancing on skates. "India's Got Talent" is integral to the script of "Lafangey Parindey" as both the lead actors are seen participating in the show in the movie.

It made sense for the production house to opt for such marketing through the TV show.

"'Lafangey Parindey' will soon be showcased on Colors. We are extremely happy to have entered this unique association, involving a marketing in-film integration and the film's consequent acquisition of its television rights, with one of the leading channels in the country," said Akshaye Widhani, vice president, Yash Raj Films.

Ali Zafar signs Yash Raj film

Bowled over by the actor’s performance in Tere Bin Laden, Aditya Chopra signed him for YRF’s next.

Yesterday, this newspaper reported that the lead actor of Tere Bin Laden, Ali Zafar, is considering moving to Mumbai. Well, now we know why.

The Pakistani actor has a new fan in Aditya Chopra and was recently signed on by Yash Raj Films for their next film, which will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar (yes, the name coincidentally is quite similar!).

Apparently, Ritesh Deshmukh was initially approached for the same role but he declined the offer. Apart from Ali in one of the lead roles, the untitled YRF film stars Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif as well. Clearly, Ritesh’s loss is Ali’s gain.

Our source said, “Aditya Chopra loved Tere Bin Laden. YRF is known to spot talented newcomers. They are also giving director Ali Abbas Zafar his first break in this film. And as far as the actor Ali Zafar is concerned, the production house may sign him for at least three films.”

So, Ali’s future looks bright. When contacted, the official spokesperson of Yash Raj Films confirmed the news and said, “Ali Zafar has been confirmed for a leading part in the movie along with Imran and Katrina.”

Aamir Khan in Aditya’s mind

Well there are denials of Katrina working with the Bollywood badshah SRK for YRF project but a close hand reveals that for the 50th golden anniversary of Bollywood premiere production house Yash Raj Films, the production house does has an impressive line up to celebrate its golden jubilee next year.

A close hand reveals that the banner is gung ho for a face lift as its recent performances are not at all encouraging. According to sources are to be believed the banner will be coming with five films next year.

The first of these five films to go on floors next month is the Katrina, Imran Khan starrer to be helmed by a new comer.

The next will be by the maestro Yash Chopra himself; his talented son Aditya is planning something keeping Aamir in mind and YRF also has project with Bollywood hottie Hrithik and the current prince charming Ranbir Kapoor.

Yes, there is no official word on this projects but a comeback backed by fifty years of successful glorious standings makes you trust that YRF will go all out to win the hearts and its supremacy once again.

When Deepika sounded like Big B

Okay, this might sound shocking, but believe it or not, when Neil Nitin Mukesh narrates this story, it sounds like a rip-roaring comedy.

Recently, during an exclusive interview with zoOm, he told us how Deepika Padukone’s gola binge ended up with her sounding like Amitabh Bachchan. And the Lafangey Parindey jodi got into a banter about this. Neil said, “I warned her not to have too many. She probably had more than seven at one go. And when she landed on the sets everyone thought Mr Bachchan was there.” Ms Dee quickly defended, “It was very hot, and we were shooting outdoors. I had never had a gola before this... you don’t get golas in Bangalore. I loved the kaala khatta flavour.” Yeah, we know that the thing with golas is that you can’t stop at one. Now anyone would give an arm and leg to sound like Big B, even for a day, hai na? We think you should be screaming with joy at that, Ms Dee.

Games for Lafangey Parindey

Yash Raj films has developed two online games for their forthcoming movie Lafangey Parindey. Based on the characters played by Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone, they’re available on www.yashrajfilms.com. Players can take on
the avatar of One-shot Nandu (Mukesh’s character) or Pinky Palkar (Padukone).

“One-shot Nandu’s game is based on boxing. You score depending on speed and how many opponents you knock out,” explains Priyanka Khatri, spokesperson for Yash Raj films. Similarly, Pinky Palkar’s animated version spins, jumps and speed skates to score points.

Mukesh is excited about One-shot Nandu’s game. “He jabs and throws punches in under a minute. It’s great fun,” he says.

I rediscovered Mumbai with Lafangey Parindey: Sarkar

He has been living in Mumbai for several years, but director Pradeep Sarkar says that he came to know the real beauty of Mumbai when he started working on Lafangey Parindey, a film set in the gritty streets of Mumbai.

Since the story is set in a wadi ( a middle-class housing society) he and his production team went across Mumbai, hunting for the right wadi, before settling for one in Chembur.

In the process Sarkar realised that he was so distanced from their life, dreams and aspiration and discovered that the relationships there are so different. “The residents of wadis know a lot about their neighbours and feel for their success and failures. They also have this winning streak in them. It is this streak that my lead actors Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone, will reflect,” says Sarkar.

Neil plays a boxer, One Shot Nandu, who fights blindfolded and Deepika, Pinky Palkar, who is blind but has an ambition to win a dance competition. Shooting with the actors playing such characters was not easy. A lot can be attributed to action director Sham Kaushal for getting Neil to fight blindfolded.

“He and his assistants would guide him when he was blindfolded. At first he would falter but soon he got the sense of the whole setup. On the other hand, Deepika did not prepare herself for the part by observing or interacting with blind people. It was the approach of focusing her mind on something and looking ahead with a blank expression, something we do so often in real life. The moment she understood that she started giving perfect expressions,” says the director.

As for the actors performing dangerous stunts in the film, the director reveals. “Riding bikes on open roads in the night is just a way of life for boys living in wadis, and Neil was doing just that. There are no stunts that he has performed. Deepika too is shown doing gritty stuff like people living in these localities do,” informs Sarkar.

Some parts were shot on a set constructed at Chandivili Studios, and others around Mumbai.

YRF's two-way integration with Colors for latest flick

Lafangey Parindey, the latest offering from the Yash Raj banner has done an integration deal with general entertainment channel Colors. Under the deal Deepika Padukone, the lead actress in the film will be shown participating in Colors' popular reality show India's Got Talent .

In Lafangey Parindey Padukone plays a character called Pinky Palkar, a blind girl who is a fabulous dancer on skates.

As part of this two-way integration, Neil Nitin Mukesh, the lead actor of the film will make an appearance with Padukone in an episode of India’s Got Talent on Colors. This is a case of cross-media promotion as the film's starcast will promote the show on celluloid while the show will in return promote the film on TV. “Our association with Colors for Lafangey Parindey is a unique integration based on the central theme of encouraging talent which is common to both the film and the show. Both the lead characters in the film come together with their individual aspirations to conquer the world.

And what better platform than India’s Got Talent which reflects the spirit of the movie and where anyone can rise to fame if he or she has a special gift and the will to achieve”, said, Rafiq Gangjee, vice president - marketing & communications, Yash Raj Films.

Gaurav Gandhi, chief commercial officer & head - International Business, Viacom18 said, “We are confident that our viewers will enjoy this celebration of talent on COLORS as well as on the big screen when the film releases in August.”

This is not the first instance of two-way integration in movies as in the film Delhi 6 , the lead actress Sonam Kapoor was seen participating in Indian Idol, a popular reality show on Sony Entertainment Television. The actress had then come to promote the film in one of the episodes of the show in its last season.

I like dominating girls: Neil Nitin Mukesh

Neil Nitin Mukesh broke up with his girlfriend a few months back. And though he is enjoying being single, he hasn’t given up on love. And he has a tip for the ladies out there - “I like dominating girls!”

Talking more about it, Neil says he likes girl who are similar to the character of Pinky Palkar from his film Lafangey Parindey.

In the film, the character - who is blind yet fierce girl - has been played by Deepika Padukone. Interestingly, he admits Deepika has all the traits he likes in his ideal girl.

However, he’s quick to point out that he and Deepika are merely good friends.

Director Pradeep Sarkar’s son sings for ‘Lafangey Parindey’

Director Pradeep Sarkar, who is introducing his son Ronit Sarkar as a playback singer in his forthcoming film “Lafangey Parindey”, reveals that he was unaware of his singing talent until he heard him live in a music concert.

Ronit has lent his voice to the title track of the film.

“I didn’t know such a good singer was growing in my house. I had seen him playing guitar, sometimes humming some tune, but I never lent ear to that very seriously. He has a small band. Once he was performing somewhere and I decided to go and see what he does. To my surprise, he was singing so well that people were clapping and whistling on his performance. He was singing very well,” says the proud father.

“I made him sing in a couple of my ads, he was fantastic. Anandh (music director) was looking for a fresh voice, one who could sing in high pitch and modulate well between the notes. He chose him for the song,” Sarkar told IANS in an interview.

The director, who has given films like “Parineeta” (2005) and “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey of a Woman” (2007), has teamed up with Deepika Padukone, Neil Nitin Mukesh and other actors to present the story of a group of youngsters living in the backstreets of Mumbai.

“We heard a verse ‘Kabhi saaf, kabhi gande, lafangey parindey’ and from that we fell in love with the phrase ‘lafangey parindey’. Lafangey means wild and parindey as we all know means birds. Together it means the flight of a bird. The film is about hope,” said Sarkar.

It was reported that in the film Deepika and Neil utter some swear words in keeping with the backdrop of the film, but the director puts off such speculations.

“There is no offensive language used in the film. Those used are the colloquial words which are invariably used by people of that society. Basically, I didn’t get away from the language that is there. There is a phrase called magic reality, I have tried to evolve that,” Sarkar added.

Talking about the leading lady of the film, Sarkar said: “Deepika never takes anything as an obstacle. However difficult things get, she always gives her best with a smiling face. That’s the first interesting quality that you notice about her, she is always smiling. She is always ready to do whatever is asked for the role.”

However, Sarkar doesn’t quite share the same views about her male counterpart. “Neil is a sober guy, but every moment he is into some mischievous stuff. During the shooting of the film, he used to do his own make up, practise a lot for his fighting sequences and other times used to play pranks on crew members. So the lafanganess (wildness) is in-built in him.”

“Lafangey Parindey” hits the theatres Aug 20.

Aamir, the baddie in Dhoom 3?

Aamir Khan has had just one dilemma in the last eight months. The actor has been obsessed with one thought — after 3 Idiots ,what next?

On July 9, BT broke the news that Aamir and filmmaker Yash Chopra had decided to work together. While the market buzzed with news of Aamir playing the villain in Dhoom 3, sources close to the actor denied it categorically. However, it is now known that Aamir met with Aditya Chopra, who gave him an one-line narration of the role of the villain the film. And, an insider reveals, “Aamir has loved what he heard. In all probability, he will listen to the script on August 13 when he returns from Melbourne and Delhi.”

Aamir doesn’t wish to confirm or deny these developments as yet because he will start reading the script next week after his Peepli Live releases. However, it is said that the actor is keen to play the baddie because what he heard from Adi has truly excited him. A trade source says, “After 3 Idiots Aamir needs something very challenging and dynamic. And he knows that playing the villain in a established franchise like the Dhoom series will create a huge buzz.”

Dhoom 3 in all likelihood may not be directed by Sanjay Gadhvi. Chances are that the film may have a director of Aamir’s choice. As of now, the Chopras are very excited because their villains have been the most talked about characters in the Dhoom series. The first one had John Abraham, the second had Hrithk Roshan, and if they get Aamir for the third, it will be the crowning glory.

Aamir has earlier played a baddie in Raakh and Fanaa. But reports say that the villain of Dhoom 3 will be a very stylised character. And he is likely to make as much impact as Gabbar Singh of Sholay or Dr Mogambo from Mr India.

Imran Khan-Katrina in Yash Raj film

Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif have finally signed for a film that will go on floors next month. After Sanjay Gadhvi’s 7 Days In Paris ran into financial trouble and Emraan Hashmi replaced Imran Khan in Dibakar’s next, Yash Raj Films has signed Imran Khan and Katrina for their next. Though still untitled, the film will be directed by debutante Ali Abbas Zafar. Ali has written the script and the film will be the next one to go on floors under the YRF banner as early as next month.

Yes, YRF has got a fresh new face in Imran but the actor too has benefited from this deal. As reported earlier, Sanjay Gadhvi’s film ran into financial trouble and Emraan Hashmi replaced Imran Khan in Dibakar’s political thriller. Apparently, Imran and Dibakar intend to do a film eventually but that’s for later. In the meantime, the two debacles have seemingly brought luck to both Imran and Katrina.

Our source said, “This is the first time Imran will work in a YRF Film. The film was not scheduled to start earlier but since Katrina had bulk dates to give, considering Dostana 2 was postponed, Imran also agreed and the film is ready to take off immediately. Imran is known to be choosy but he loved the script and has signed the film. It’s a romantic film. Ali has assisted YRF in four films earlier: Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, New York, Tashan and the recently released Badmash Company .”

Imran Khan confirmed, “I am happy to be a part of the film and to be working with YRF. I love the way Adi functions. I also liked the way Ali has visualised his script.”

Parmeet Sethi's a busy boy

Parmeet Sethi is definitely doing great in life after the success of Badmaash Company. The actor is busy working on his second film with Yash Raj. “To be honest, it’s still in thenascent stage. All I can say is that it’s going to be interestingly differentlike Badmaash Company,” he says.

The actor-turned-directorsays, “Adi (Aditya Chopra) has signed me for three films. Nothing else is more important than that,” he adds.

Parmeet remembers the day when Aditya approved his script, “After finishing the script in six days, I was waiting. One fine day he called me andtold me that he wanted to produce the film. I was speechless and passed the phone to Archana. Archana scolded me saying that Adi wanted to speak to me. I was at a loss for words. I realised that I got the biggest break of my life,” he says.

Though his film career did not take off after the mega success of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, he did well on television. “Whatever said and done, I owe everything to TV. My success is due to the audience who loved me on TV shows. But for the moment, I want to focus on my film,” he ends.

Anushka Sharma's BAND BAAJA BARAAT

Before you start speculating, let us inform you that Anushka Sharma is not getting married. BAND BAAJA BARAAT, is reportedly, the tentative title of her next Yash Raj film opposite newcomer Ranveer Singh. The film was earlier referred to as SHAADI MUBARAK.

The story revolves around Shruti (Anushka) and Bittoo (Ranveer) who start a business after passing out from Delhi University. Their friendship and business enters the lavish world of Delhi's baraats and weddings.

It is being directed by Maneesh Sharma, who worked as an assistant director on Shahrukh Khan-starrer RAB NE BANA DI JODI. It is slated to release later this year.

When Deepika had to hit Neil with a broom

During the making of LAFANGEY PARINDEY, Pradeep Sarkar, was rehearsing for a scene in which Deepika Padukone had to beat Neil Nitin Mukesh and his friends first with a broom and then by throwing a pail of water on them.

He insisted that Deepika was not doing the scene correctly. So he picked up a jhaadu (broom) himself and hit Neil and Namit on their bums. Both of them stood, holding their bums while Deepika and the whole unit burst into laughter.

LAFANGEY PARINDEY is all set to release on August 20.

Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl: a classic recipe for box office bullion

After a summer of under-performing blockbusters, Hollywood bosses might do well to look at the incredible success of India's longest-running film, still packing in cinema-goers after 15 years.

Released in 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The big hearted will take the bride) has become one of the most popular films of all time.

Having broken all records in terms of number of showings and box office takings, it is now in its 769th week at one of the main cinemas in Mumbai (Bombay), the beating heart of Bollywood.

And the film continues to play to a nearly full house over weekends at the 1,000-plus-seat Maratha Mandir cinema in the south of the city.

Spectators stream in in steady numbers for the matinee show of DDLJ - as it is popularly known - at the 52-year-old cinema.

The best seats cost just 20 rupees (42 US cents; 27 UK pence).

Manoj Desai, executive director of the cinema, says the movie has been a record-breaking success for multiple reasons.

"The film is perfect with lovely music and the best Bollywood pair," he says.

"Also, this theatre is in a strategic location where we get 40% viewing from people who are travelling into or out of Mumbai.

"This place is for masses, so the rates have been maintained for years. Most importantly the film is important because of its message of love with parents' permission."

For sheer box office staying power, the movie has even leap-frogged classics such as The Sound of Music and The Guns of Navarone, Mr Desai said.
'Magical'

It is a love story, where boy meets girl (both Indians living in London) on a trip to Europe.

But girl's marriage is already fixed to her father's friend's son in Punjab in India.

What follows is an entertaining drama careering between London and Punjab, and in the end, of course, the lovers get together - with the families' blessing.

The lead pair, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, became stars overnight.

The film catapulted Shahrukh Khan, now also known as King Khan, to the top league of stars and he was typecast as a "romantic hero" for years.

Cinema officials say nearly all seats are taken at weekends and the film sometimes does better than new releases.

The film is now run on a no-profit, no-loss basis for the theatre as well as for Yash Raj Films, producer of DDLJ.

Jagjivan Maru, the cinema's chief projectionist, who has been showing this movie since its release, says it is magical.

"I have seen this movie every day for the last 14 years. That is a record in itself. It is our job to show the film. However, I never get bored of DDLJ.

"It's like I am in a loving relationship with the film. I still love the last scene when Amrish Puri [who plays father of the actress] slaps Shahrukh Khan."
A story well told

Rishi, who had come to see the film, said: "I had seen this film earlier four to five times many years back. I also see it on TV once in while.

"I dropped in with my friends. Maybe I still like the film because I first saw it in my college days and it really worked then. Most of my friends saw the film many times - for the love story, songs and the actors."

Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst says: "It is not about the records this film has set. Records will follow if there is content.

"This film has got everything right: music, actors, direction. The movie is still making decent collections despite it being shown on TV very often. It is a story well told."

The cinema officials plan to keep the film running as long as they can and have planned a big celebration in October 2010 to mark the full 15 years since its release.

Among other popular features of the movie is its catchphrase "Come, fall in love" - and the audience at Maratha Mandir seemed to have done just that with DDLJ.

When Neil shied away from smooching Deepika Padukone!

Reports reveal that when Neil had to kiss Deepika Padukone on-screen for their forthcoming flick, ‘Lafangey Parindey’, the actor got cold feet. Neil reportedly isn’t too pleased with the idea of kissing on-screen, and the actor has always stood by his no-kiss policy in all his films so far.

According to our source, this isn’t the first time that Neil didn’t want to lock lips with his co-star, as the actor’s refused to kiss actresses like Rimi Sen, Shahana Goswami and Mughda Godse on-screen in the past.

However, Pradeep Sarkar, the director of ‘Lafangey Parindey’, finally managed to convince the actor to kiss Dips in the flick, as it’s the demand of the script, according to reports.

Neil hides stunts from dad

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who has done some daredevil stunts in his forthcoming film "Lafangey Parindey", says he never speaks to his singer father Nitin Mukesh about these dangerous scenes.

"I don’t tell my father what stunts I am doing. Instead of me, he will try and do them. He knows I am not going to tell him about what stunts I am doing. During 'Aa Dekhen Zara', I had jumped from nine-storied building. After jumping, I had called dad and said that I am all right," Neil told IANS in an interview.

Even when he did stunts in director Pradeep Sarkar's "Lafangey Parindey", Neil didn’t inform his dad.

"This time when I finished my stunts, I called him and said all went well. It’s okay with him now. It’s a part of our life. We have to do these things," he said.

"Must give a lot of credit to action director Shyam Kaushal. He had choreographed the stunts very well and trained me properly before the shoot," said Neil.

But Neil refuses to promote such stunts.

"I won’t promote these stunts. I don’t want anyone to try them. We did it only and purely for entertainment. There were many people, enough security and roads were blocked before we performed the stunts. One should never try them," said Neil.

Set in the mean streets of Mumbai, "Lafangey Parindey" is a love story where Neil plays Nandu, a boxer who pummels his opponents blindfolded. Deepika Padukone features as Pinky Palkar, an ambitious blind girl who dances with roller skates on her feet.

In the film, Neil teaches Deepika to see and she teaches him how to love.

After venturing into the TV space last year, Yash Raj Films, one of the country's top production houses is all set to launch a new films division that would specifically target the youth. The division which is apparently called Yash Raj Youth will work towards promoting new, young and fresh talent.

Most of the actors, directors, script-writers who will be working for this division will be youngsters. Commenting on this, Rafiq Gangjee, VP- Marketing and Communications YRF said, "Yes...we are launching a new youth films division. However, we will sign new talent on the basis of the requirement of the script and characters, not necessarily limited to the 16-22 age groups."

Yash Chopra returns to direction, film goes on floor next year

Old is gold, this is one adage that has lasted the test of time, and proving it once again is the veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra who has announced his return to film direction.

Speaking on a show to FOX History & Entertainment channel, the man said, "Yes I am planning on starting my next film in winter this year, though I have the subject in mind. I am writing the script for the same and will start casting by the end of this year."

YRF spokesperson confirmed the same saying, "Yes, Yashji will be returning to films, and like he says the genre of the film will be his forte of emotion and romance."

A noted tabloid recently published a story about Ash and SRK coming together after a hiatus for a Yashraj film and even quoted a source from the production house. But YRF is quite miffed by this particular ‘breaking news’ and has issued an official statement rubbishing the rumour.

“Despite our categorical denial of this baseless rumour, the tabloid continued to publish this with an ambiguous quote from a person at YRF. It is totally baseless and not true,” the official statement said.

YRF also clearly stated, “it would be great if you (media) could please check with us before quoting any unconfirmed sources.”

It seems there is no scope for the Ash-SRK jodi in YRF.

Anil, Sonam to star together

YRF set to cast Anil and Sonam Kapoor together in a film, but they may not play father and daughter

In Bollywood, producers and directors are always looking for a magical cast that will deliver a hit. Yash Raj Films and Aditya Chopra, having finally convinced Anil Kapoor and his daughter Sonam to work together in a film, achieved a casting coup which earlier Rakeysh Mehra failed to do in Delhi 6.

Anil Kapoor doesn’t deny the buzz. He says, “Aditya has narrated an idea for me and Sonam in a film together. And I really, really like it. In fact, this is the first time that I’ve liked something which has been offered to both of us.”

Refusing to divulge any more details, Anil says, “I can’t tell you if it’s the role of father-daughter. But I can tell you that ideally when I do a film with Sonam, I don’t want us to be cast in real-life roles.”

Anil further reveals that he came close to sharing screen space with Sonam recently. “I was supposed to do a role in Anees Bazmi’s Thank You which Sonam is doing. At that time, Katrina Kaif was supposed to do the part. Once Sonam stepped in, I opted out. I wanted our combination to be really special when it happened.”

There was another reason why Anil opted out of Thank You. Anil’s role was that of Akshay Kumar’s buddy who encourages him to be flirtatious. “All I will say is, it was a role I wouldn’t have been comfortable doing with Sonam in the picture,” says Anil.

At the moment Anil is gearing up for a couple of months of intense competition with his own daughter. “That’s right,” he chuckles. “My home production Aisha with Sonam will be released in August, at the same time that my series 24 will be aired in India. We’re promoting 24 like any big film. You could say it’s Sonam versus me.”

Anil adds that Aisha was not designed for Sonam. “It was an idea that Sonam and my younger daughter Rhea came up with. If I hadn’t liked it, I wouldn’t have produced it. In our production company, no film will be made to provide a chance to any of us. If I wanted to do that, I’d have produced a film for Sonam as a launch vehicle and not handed her over to Sanjay Leela Bhansali.”

I wrote Badmaash Company in frustration: Parmeet Sethi

Shahid Kapoor-starrer Badmaash Company, about four friends doing con jobs to become rich overnight, has got good reviews and viewers have enjoyed their capers but first time director Parmeet Sethi says he wrote the script of the film in frustration.

"The bell actually rang three years back when I was sure that I will direct a film. This is the second script that I have written," Parmeet told IANS.

"Yash Raj Films (YRF) had approved my first script too, but we couldn't make it. I waited for one and a half years, but the film didn't take off and I was frustrated. I was in a dilemma whether to stick to my plans to direct a film or go back to acting. Then in frustration, I wrote this script," he added.

"I had five ideas with me out of which two were most compelling. I wanted to write another script before this but that required research work in Canada, which would have taken six months. I didn't have the money. I didn't have the time. So I chose this one because I enjoy the genre very much. I think no one has done a full-on con film intelligently," the actor-turned director said.

Set in the 1990s, "Badmaash Company" is about four young friends - Shahid, Anushka Sharma, Vir Das and Meiyang Chang - from middle-class Mumbai who get together to start a company. Their business is an instant hit because they find a way to beat the system by doing all the wrong things in a right way.
The critics have praised the film despite it being too long.

"First, I worked out the whole con thing in my head, then I put it down on paper as script and then wrote dialogues. There are four con jobs in the film and I had to come up with interesting ideas each time to make it as believable as possible," said Parmeet.

To get the right feel of the 1990s, he shot some scenes in Hyderabad.

"The cars, the houses and other locations that we shot in Mumbai, I was particular about everything because I wanted to bring the essence of the 1990s. I actually went to Hyderabad to shoot the airport scene. Mumbai airport of today is very, very modern. But the Hyderabad airport still looks like the old Mumbai airport," he said.
The director, who worked with freshers like Vir and Chang, says he signed Anushka Sharma on Aditya Chopra's recommendation.
"I wanted some very fresh faces and Vir and Chang were the perfect choice. I didn't want to have predictable faces. Anushka was Adi's recommendation. I didn't know her personally. I was a little doubtful, but Adi assured me that I'll like her once we meet," he said.

Parmeet, who featured in Aditya's directorial debut "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (1995), says he was sceptical while approaching YRF to produce the film.

"I spoke over phone and asked for an appointment with Adi and I got it. That's all I did. In the last 15 years I hardly met Adi as he hardly socialises...everyone knows that. I was hoping he hadn't forgotten me. But he not only gave me the appointment but gave me respect and was pleasantly surprised by my script," he said.
Parmeet now wants to be behind the camera and make more films but doesn't rule out the possibility of getting back to acting.

"I haven't said good bye to anything. I don't want to be cocky about life. But as of now it's only direction for me. I think this is my main career now."

Shahid shines again with 'Badmaash Company'

After three back-to-back duds "Dil Bole Hadippa!", "Chance Pe Dance" and "Paathshala", actor Shahid Kapoor has risen again with his latest outing "Badmaash Company" that has got a decent opening at the box office.

"The initial weekend collection has been anywhere around 60-70 percent all over India," trade analyst Atul Mohan told IANS.

"The movie has made somewhere around Rs.30-35 crore gross in the first three days," an industry source said.

Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, said: "'Badmaash Company' has been above average and done good over the first weekend. It brought us around 72 percent occupancy for 20 shows and an initial weekend gross of Rs.14 lakh. Though contentwise people are neutral about it."

"We are expecting it to stretch for another weekend as there are no as such any big releases this Friday."

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, "Badmaash Company" is actor Parmeet Sethi's directorial debut. Starring Shahid Kapoor in the lead, it also has Anushka Sharma, comedian Vir Das and reality show star Meiang Chang.

B.O. update: 'Badmaash Company' starts off very well

After HOUSE FULL opened to an excellent start last week, it was the turn of BADMAASH COMPANY to open to a heartening start at the box-office. Shahid Kapoor's last major release CHANCE PE DANCE [not counting PAATHSHAALA] had fetched a below average start, so it was imperative that BADMAASH COMPANY fetch a good start at the ticket window. The opening numbers of BADMAASH COMPANY were an impressive 80% to 90% at places, while at places it ranged from 45% to 75%, which only improved towards the evening shows.

The opening weekend of BADMAASH COMPANY is expected to be better, given the fact that the film has tremendous youth appeal and that in turn should witness an escalation in business. Overall, the film should have a very good weekend, which reinforces Yash Raj and Shahid's pull at the ticket window.

'Badmaash Company' is bold, needed intimate scenes: Parmeet

He wouldn’t agree that he is in the company of any Badmaash, but debutant director Parmeet Sethi sure has a devilish film up his sleeve. Known for his appearance on ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ and on detective TV serial DON a few years back, the hubby of Archana-HA HA HA- Puran Singh has directed Yashraj’s Shahid Kapoor starrer 'Badmaash Company' and says he is here to do more.

Excerpts from an exclusive interview with Shashank Chouhan of Spicezee.com:

Q. You have said 'Badmaash Company' is inspired from real life characters and events.

A. Indeed that is the case. The characters in the film are loosely based on the people I have met in real life. That gives an intense appeal to my film’s characters. And yes the scams that have been portrayed are also based on reality, though giving any more information would be giving away the story itself.

Q. Your actors say you are a stubborn, Badmaash director.

A. I am stubborn yes, I am un-compromising. That is the only way of preserving the integrity of vision. My actors and producers knew from the start that I am a head-strong guy and that I won’t compromise on any aspect of the script.

Q. What's new or different about your film?

A. It is all-in-all an extremely fresh film- the dialogue, characters; the cast and the story are fresh. The genre is very exciting, it has been quite a long time that the audiences saw such a film. The film has a lot of soul, emotions and entertainment.

Q.. Did you write the lead character with Shahid Kapoor in mind?

A. Not really, though his character is surely author backed. But once I wrote the script, it seemed meant only for Shahid Kapoor.

Q. How come you have cast so many new comers. Was it your idea or the producer’s?

A. More or less it was my idea though everything was done after discussion with Adi (Aditya Chopra). Since this is a fresh script, I did not want old actors. Old people come with their own baggage; audience want to see them in a certain way. I had a fresh approach, so barring the lead pair, all are newcomers.

Q. You have said yours is a solid script. You wrote it in six days straight. Was it in your mind for long?

A. Not really. Writing this script in six days straight was nothing short of a miracle. I t is some divine work. Scripts usually take up to six months to fully develop.

Q. A lot is being said about the intimate scenes between Shahid and Anushka. How did it go?

A. Well, it was a part of the script. It is completely for the film and not for any cheap thrills. Shahid and Anushka were comfortable after I explained to them the need for such scenes. 'Badmaash Company' is a bold film which talks to today’s youth, in the style that they want and live by

Q. But these days most films have nudity in the name of script…

A. While watching such a film, you must see what character is portraying nudity. Is the character of an outgoing nature, is her style bold. Now Anushka’s character is a bold one. She couldn’t be a part of a badmaash company if she was not like how she is portrayed. I couldn’t show her all coy and demure. She will seduce you.

Q. What kind of an experience was directing? It is your debut.

A. It has been a very tough and happy experience. I have done ghost-direction and written scripts in the past and that prepared me for this mammoth project. It is a big responsibility. There are a lot of new things I have learnt. I had to fight odds at every level, there was a lot of pressure. But it was a very satisfying experience. It was akin to the longest orgasm of life.

Q. And what has been the contribution of Archana Puran Singh in your dream debut?

A. Archana has supported me in everything. She has been there not only emotionally but also supported the family financially when I was busy trying to achieve my dream and it was very important for me.

Q. What is next?

A. I don’t know! I have a deal with Yashraj for three films. I have 5-6 ideas in mind but I really don’t know which I will work on.

We don't kiss for the heck of it: Anushka

After playing a simple girl-next-door, Anushka Sharma has gone in for an image makeover in Badmaash Company where she not only wears stylish clothes but also has a kissing scene with Shahid Kapoor. The model-turned-actress says the script demanded it and it wasn't meant just to attract attention.

"I don't see it as a kissing scene. It's a part of the screenplay. I think cinema is changing and we are not doing (kissing) for the heck of it. We do not need to do this (kiss on screen) to attract attention," Anushka told IANS in an interview.

"When you see the film, the kind of chemistry Bulbul (her character in the film) and Karan (Shahid) share, the kind of love that's there between them, you will be able to understand that the scene was justified," said Anushka, who made her debut as a small town girl in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

The 22-year-old claims the audiences will be able to relate to the characters in the film as all of them represent the middle-class dreams.

"This film is about four friends, their relationships and the trials they go through to achieve their goals. All the characters are extremely relatable because they come from middle-class families with big dreams and aspirations. We have all been like that. Their dreams are really big. They have not got any patience...They want to do it right away," she said.

Set in Mumbai of the 1990s, Badmaash Company is about four youngsters who start a business and find a way to beat the system.

Anushka's gang in the film comprises Shahid, Vir Das and Miang Chang. And she says they gelled well.

"When we travelled outdoors, we got to spend time with each other...We hung out, ate out, went to the pub. Good that we got along very well because it was a pre-requisite of the film," said Anushka.

Badmaash Company is actor-turned-director Parmeet Sethi's first outing as director. Anushka says Parmeet knew the characters inside out, but was still open to others' ideas.

Anushka enjoys not being a trained actor because it allows her to visualise scenes naturally.

"I quite enjoy the fact that I'm not a trained actor...If you are experienced, you have a certain method of acting, but I haven't discovered that method yet. There is a positive side of not being a trained actor. When I get a scene, I see how naturally it should be done. People call it natural acting and that is also a method," she said.

Asked if she wants to explore any particular genre, she said: "No, I am not looking forward to any particular genre. I'm open to doing films of every genre and with different directors. There are so many things that I would love to do - a period love story or an action film."

But Anushka finds acting a difficult profession and says her hectic schedule leaves her with little time for her friends.

"I never wanted to be an actor. I wanted to remain a model. Had I wanted to be an actor I would have been more observant about actors. After Rab Ne... I realised that it's a very difficult profession. You don't have time for your personal life, for your parents, and your social circuit becomes very small because you are working day and night," she said.

Describing the film, Shahid said: "There are very interesting characters, extremely fresh dialogues, con jobs which I have not seen in any other film, but yet very easy to understand. It`s not complicated at all. It`s a very fun film and there was no reason why I shouldn`t be doing it."

What makes their venture a stupendous success is that they find a way to beat the system and soon become the undisputed kings in their business. Living the life of champagne wishes and caviar dreams, the four realise that to make a business successful they don`t need big money but a big idea.

With their larger than life schemes, Karan, Bulbul, Zing and Chandu go on a wild roller-coaster ride into the world of sheer glitz and glamour where the stakes are high and risks even higher. They succeed in making quick money by doing all the wrong things... but the right way.

All is hunky dory till the four entrepreneurs are forced to shut shop. They come up with yet another perfect plan to beat the system for the last time.

Shahid said a lot of research went into their looks as the film is set in the 1990s.

"We spent a lot of time deciding the look and styling of the film. We wanted it to represent the 1990s correctly but at the same time we did not want it to look boring," he said.

"We researched on the scenario of the 1990s and used them in the film. For example, we used clothes that were in fashion like high waisted jeans, simple t-shirts which used to be tucked in, the aviators, which were all in vogue.

"Also the calculator watch that was very much in fashion at that time has been used in the movie. The film starts in 1994 and goes on for five years," he explained.

The songs of the movie have already become a hit.

Vir Das scolded during ‘Badmaash Company’ shoot

New Delhi, May 1 – Stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das experienced a not-so-comic situation in real life when he got a scolding from ‘Badmaash Company’ director Parmeet Sethi.

Vir has a penchant for getting tattoos on his body but since most of the scenes in the movie involve Vir being shirtless on the beaches of Bangkok, he had to spend hours in the makeup room covering the tattoos.

While shooting in Bangkok, Vir decided to opt for one more tattoo on his arm, a decision that made Parmeet scold him as he had to spend extra time in covering the new one, holding up the shoot for an even longer period.

‘Yes, I did get a tattoo done in Bangkok and Parmeet did scold me for it but it was nothing serious and it was all in good humour. Parmeet and I hit it off right from the first day of shoot,’ said Vir.

The film, also starring Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Chang, is slated to hit the screens May 7.

Shahid Speaks on Badmaash Company

And there he walks in with a huge smile. In his trademark blue denims and a blue printed tee, Shahid looked like one naughty kid entering a press conference. Now a man, and a bad one too (looking by his released films titled Kaminey and Badmaash Company), Kapoor is seen deeply sucked into the world of films. He has slight stubble which he confessed he has grown for one of the many look tests he is undergoing for his father's directorial debut Mausam. He walks a few strides and then turns the chair around and sits with his legs widely stretched. That's comfort for Shahid. He has no regrets and has left his inhibitions in the bin. That's why you see him more relaxed today. He again breaks into laughter on the few questions being asked, then orders for some water, and as he is about to answer one of the any questions thrown to him, his father calls him on his mobile. Unlike other heroes, he picks the call up. Then you look at the journalists and they are fine with it. They are fine with the fact that they treat Shahid as one of them - street smart, wicked (sometimes), witty, mad and upfront. Today, as I see him sitting at an arm's distance, I notice a different Shahid. I notice that he hasn't changed. UK's Harrow Observer columnist and Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent meets the man who dictates his own rules, creates his own rules and breaks his own - the sweet 'kamina' and an even sweeter 'badmaash' Shahid Kapoor. It's con-fession time!

Kaminey and Badmaash Company. You've got a lot of bad names man!
(Laughs) I don't know. Maybe my directors see a lot of 'kaminapan' and 'badmaashi' inside me. I'm happy and it's fun playing a bad guy. I've not done it for many years since I began my career. Now I'm getting all bad guys roles because of Kaminey. Badmaash is a little less of a bad guy than a kamina (laughs). Kaminey's role was a lot more physical and quick. Badmaash Company sees me as more of a thinker.

Which means that you haven't played a role like Badmaash?
Yes. I haven't played a role like this before, of a scammer and of a con artist. It's a genre that I really get excited about. Con films are rarely seen in Bollywood. I think films like Bunty Aur Babli was restricted in its conning. It was more of a small time con guys. Badmaash Company is a lot more believable.


How do con artists make money?
Con artists don't make money through conning people. They make money because their ideas are bigger than their pockets. That's why the line in the film goes - 'Any business grows not because of the power of money, but because of a bigger idea' which I believe in. Their big idea happens to be a scam and they pull it off. They believe that they are getting success through conning people and don't mind pursuing it as their business. There is a reason why they do that. They want to break out of their normal life. A life of 9 to 6 jobs and all. They are young, enthusiastic and that's why they want to do something unpredictable.

What was your interaction with Parmeet after you read the script?
I think Parmeet Sethi is a dangerous guy. He is a big con man. Watch out for him. But when I spoke to him after reading the script, he told me that all these con jobs were picked up from newspapers. He has taken the basic thought of every con job from a real incident and that's why it is the biggest strength of our film as it looks believable. Plus, the film is also based in the mid nineties.

 What about the nineties?
We used to get it the easy way. I mean, the whole customs act wasn't introduced back then. Everything was sold in 'black money'. So that time was very apt for this kind of a plot. System wasn't well defined. It's a lot more logical. We shot at the Hyderabad airport only to show that the Mumbai airport looked like this in the nineties.

So, you call yourself 'lucky'?
A con job film based in the nineties, a youth oriented film, and I'm working for the first time with three new people. When I read the script, I found that it was innovative. I hadn't come across characters like these, and con jobs like these. That's when I decided that I wanted to be a part Badmaash Company. I've been really lucky in the last three years to have got one significant film each year.


How difficult is it shifting gears from Guddu to Charlie to Karan in Badmaash Company?
It's great fun. I don't want to play Shahid in different costumes. I hope I can break that. I want to do it once in a while. An actor can never be larger than the script. If the script provides you a base where you can attempt something new without taking it away from the subject, then one does that. I'm not established than the three Khans' nor am I as new as the new ones. I'm somewhere in between. I need to balance things here. I can't do things that are so different that people don't understand. I have left all inhibitions behind and am ready to do diverse roles in my career now. This is the time in Bollywood that anybody can make a good film, anybody can be accepted and anything can work.

If you had to choose one role from your career, which role would you pick as your favourite?
Undoubtedly Kaminey. Then I guess Mausam will follow because it is the most challenging role as of now. Even my character in Badmaash Company was difficult to portray as I age five years in the film. That's something I feel is difficult.


Do you recall any incidents from your personal life where you've conned anyone?
Yes, all the time. I used to con my mother. I played cricket for six hours everyday. I have my man 'Friday' called 'Mamu' who is with me and was with my family before I was born. Mamu and I would always strategise how we will get the money out to repair the broken windows and we were successful all the time. I am an inherent badmaash. What I can't do in real life is what I do in my films.

Neil Nitin Mukesh wounded in Lafange Parinde shoot

It seems doing traumatic roles has become a part of Neil Nitin Mukesh's acting karma. For his role in Lafange Parinde the actor is required to fight man to man with his adversaries, with the result he has bloody bruises and cuts all over.

He is injured from head to toe and it's not faked for the camera.

"There's nothing fake about the fists of fury that fly in Pradeep Sarkar's film. It requires the rawest of physical violence and it can't be faked. So if you see me now I'm covered with welters, wounds and bruises, all gifted to me every day while shooting this, the most dangerous film of my career," Neil told IANS.

Luckily Neil has moved out of his South Mumbai home to Powai for the duration of the shooting of Lafange Parinde.

"Otherwise if my mother saw what I look like, she would have freaked out. I'm getting physically hurt every day. I'm covered in bruises. Because I am light-skinned, the hurt marks show up bright red on me within seconds. I look alarming! Even to myself in the mirror," he said.

Neil has temporarily packed off his makeup man. "I don't need Aseem bhai to paint on fake blood. My stunt director Shyam Kaushalji is doing a very good job of making my bruises and lacerations look real because they are real."

This isn't Neil's first tryst with danger.

"Shyam Kaushalji is someone I really respect. I touch his feet every morning although he really puts me through the most dangerous situations. In 'New York', he made me run across a street with speeding cars. In Aa Dekhe Zaraa, he had thrown me off the 18th floor. But nothing had prepared me for what Shyamji has in store for me in Lafange Parinde."

Though Neil is unwilling to reveal the plot, Lafange Parinde is about rivalry among bike gangs of Mumbai. It requires Neil to engage in serious and authentic fights on the streets.

"Fortunately, I'm not a stranger to these kind of raw... combats. I may come across as softspoken now. But I've gone through my share of campus fights during my college days. In fact, I've a fierce temper problem. So far I had kept it in check. But now in 'Lafange Parinde' I'm disturbed to see the violent ill-tempered side of me emerging effortlessly."

"What surprises me is the deep dark angry side to dada (director Pradeep Sarkar)'s personality. Who would have thought the man who made Parineeta and Laga Chunari Mein Daag had so much anger and violence in him?"

Budget blues: Yash Raj tells Kabir Khan to drop epic film

The budget crunch has eaten into one of the biggest production houses in the entertainment industry. According to well-placed sources close to Yash Raj Films, the banner which had till recently a reputation for an unbroken string of hits has now after setbacks like Dil Bole Hadippa, Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year and Pyaar Impossible instructed its roster of directors to shoot within reasonable budgets.

And financially impractical projects are a strict no-no. This, Kabir Khan discovered when after New York he decided to make a lavish big-budget epic. Initially, Aditya Chopra the Yash Raj scion was enthusiastic about the novel idea and gave Kabir a cart-blanche...

But as the script evolved it became clear to the producers that Kabir Khan's epic would be one of the most expensive films in the history of Yash Raj.

Aditya Chopra sat Kabir down for a meeting and calmly told him the epic project was not working.

Admits Kabir, "Yes I've abandoned my earlier script. This was a subject I had with me from even before I made my first feature film Kabul Express. You can say it's my dream project. And my dream is now on hold."

Kabir confirms that Aditya Chopra asked him to work on another more financially feasible subject. "After working on the earlier script for several months, I'm writing a new script. It's more of a fun film than New York. It is definitely not about global terrorism this time. I've said whatever I have had to on that subject. But a socio-political undercurrent can't be too far away from what I do."

As for Kabir's dream project, he hasn't given up on it. "That's the film I became a feature-director for. I won't give it up."

YRF's next not Shaadi Mubarak

Yash Raj Films has denied reports that their new Anushka Sharma-starrer is titled Shaadi Mubarak.“Yash Raj Films’ next under-production film with Anushka Sharma and debutant actor Ranveer Singh is being erroneously referred to as Shaadi Mubarak in the media. We’d like to clarify that the movie is still untitled and the name will be announced as soon as it is finalised,” the production house said in a statement.

Directed by Maneesh Sharma, an assistant director on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the film revolves around Anushka and Ranveer, who start a business and how their friendship and business enter the world of Delhi’s weddings.

Badmaash Company’s fashion trivia

The four members of ‘Badmaash Company’ - Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Meiyang Chang and Vir Das – appear to be cool and casual. And if one takes notice, then all the actors look amazingly different and fresh. While Shahid looks all pepped up, Anushka has been transformed from simple Taani of ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ to sizzling beauty. Similarly Meiyang and Vir too don a vibrant style, quite hatke from how we usually see them. All thanks to the film’s director Parmeet Sethi, who had clear cut as to how his characters should look.

For instance, the song “Ayaashi” has the four actors in an extremely glamorous look. When the director saw the clothes that had been selected for the song, he immediately rejected them. Sethi wanted the look to be just perfect, so he actually went out to genuine designer stores and shopped for the cast in New York. The boys turned out looking dapper and Anushka couldn't be more chic!

No female singers in soundtrack of Shahid Kapoor-starrer "Badmaash Company"

What stands out in the soundtrack of Shahid Kapoor-starrer "Badmaash Company" is the absence of female singers. But apart from this anomaly, composer Pritam Chakraborty has stuck to his trademark style of energetic, fast-paced music.

The album contains four originals and two remixes.

The soundtrack starts off with a song called "Ayaashi" sung by KK. It is a catchy song with a heavy use of percussion. The upbeat track has all the qualities of becoming a hit with the youngsters.

It also has a remix version, which has nothing new to offer.

Next is a slightly off-the-road song "Jingle jingle", which has been crooned by Mohit Chauhan in his youthful voice. It begins with the strumming of the guitar and also has elements of rap in parts. The thematic lyrics make the song interesting.

Then there is "Chaska" sung by Krishna. It has a slight rustic flavour but fails to generate interest. It ends up as a very ordinary song.

"Chaska" also has a remix version, which is just a little faster-paced than the original.

With "Fakeera", the album takes a Sufi turn but with a rock base. Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, it is an amalgamation of Indian vocals and westernised music. It is quite an appealing track.

The last number is the film's title track by Benny Dayal. The song has influences of music from James Bond films and is also musically similar to the first track "Ayaashi". The track is sure to become a regular at DJ consoles.

On the whole, the music of the film is average. Pritam has not experimented much and mostly sticks to his tried and tested style. The songs, however, could become hits on the dance floor.

YRF denies of making a film on Raj Kapoor

A reputed publication lately reported that Yash Raj Films are mulling over the idea of making a film on the much talked about romance between Raj Kapoor and Nargis Dutt. Apparently as reported in the news daily, it was Aditya Chopra who suggested about this idea to the youngest Kapoor lad Ranbir Kapoor.

When Ranbir narrated this fact to his dad Rishi Kapoor he was simply aghast. Even the other Kapoor brothers - Randhir Kapoor and Rajeev Kapoor were against any such film ideas.

However, Bollywood's premier production house (YRF) has denied such reports stating it completely baseless and fabricated.

A spokesperson from the production house clarified the reports, "It is unfortunate that the leading publication has chosen yet again to fabricate and carry a totally baseless story regarding Yash Raj Films in their edition without so much as seeking a clarification."

Further on the spokesperson adds, "We would like to clarify that the banner is not considering any film based on the life of Raj Kapoor. It is indeed a pity that a publication coming from one of the most respectable media conglomerates should indulge in this kind of rubbish."

Shahid Kapoor on rumours surrounding 'Badmaash Company'

Shahid Kapoor is not new to controversies. In fact, every time a movie starring the talented actor is ready to unfurl, stories about Shahid having problems with the director surface first, followed by news of romantic liaisons with the film's leading lady.

In the past, it was said Shahid had serious differences with Priyadarshan [CHUP CHUP KE], Aziz Mirza [KISMAT KONNECTION], Vishal Bhardwaj [KAMINEY], Anurag Singh [DIL BOLE HADIPPA!] and Ken Ghosh [CHANCE PE DANCE]. Is he difficult to work with? "Isn't it strange that people ask this question every time my movie is complete? I am asked to clarify if the director and I see eye to eye… It amuses me no end," Shahid smiles.

Reportedly, Shahid and Parmeet Sethi, the actor who makes his directorial debut with BADMAASH COMPANY, had difference of opinion over the climax of the film. "All discussions took place while we were in the [script] reading stages. If any changes were to be made, they had to be implemented before we began filming. Yes, I did express my opinion to Adi [Chopra] and Parmeet about a certain portion in the film. They agreed because they were convinced about it. But there were no issues when we began filming," Shahid clarifies. Shahid feels that Parmeet is a supremely talented director. "I am glad I agreed to work in BADMAASH COMPANY. Parmeet is a fine storyteller. In fact, I keep wondering, why didn't he take to direction earlier? Direction is his true calling," Shahid states.

There's also talk that BADMAASH COMPANY is the newer, updated version of BUNTY AUR BABLI. True? Shahid laughs, "I've heard this one too, but I am just going to say just this. Watch BADMAASH COMPANY to know the difference. Frankly, why would anyone want to remake a successful film that's still so fresh in the minds of the audience? BADMAASH COMPANY is not similar to any film. Not BUNTY AUR BABLI for sure."

Is YRF delaying DHOOM 3?

There has been much speculation about the third installment of DHOOM. A lot has been spoken about the film but no one knows the real reason for its delay.

But, according to some close sources the real reason why DHOOM 3 is not seeing the light of the day lies with its producers - Yash Raj Films.

The sources tell us that Sanjay Gadhvi who directed DHOOM and DHOOM 2 earlier is keen to start the third installment of the film but the producers are not taking keen interest in the proposition.

It must be recalled that Sanjay Gadhvi broke ties with YRF after the success of DHOOM 2. The filmmaker wanted to try other banners as well, but none proved to be luckier for him. His last film with Shree Ashtvinayak titled KIDNAP proved to a disaster at the box office.

Though, Sanjay Gadhvi is ready to make a film with YRF again, but it seems his earlier departure has rubbed the guys in YRF the wrong way and they don't mind delaying their own film to put the message of angst across.

Anushka`s new love

She was rumored to be seeing her Badmaash Company co-star Shahid Kapoor, but even before the film could release, it’s all in the distant past for Anushka Sharma.

She’s now painting the town red with newcomer Ranveer Singh, who is her co-star in Yash Raj’s next, Shaadi Mubarak Ho, directed by debutant Maneesh Sharma.

Anushka and Ranveer spotted together on Saturday night at a suburban café. Dressed casually in tracks and a tee, Ranveer was having dinner while watching a live cricket match.

A source from the unit reveals, “Both the youngsters, Anushka and Ranveer, hit it off immediately when they met each other on the sets.

The chemistry was clearly evident but most people didn’t pay it much attention then. But as shooting progressed, Ranvir and Anushka started spending more and more time together.”

The source continues, “Now they are bonding even off sets. They have been catching up for private dinners and outings, even though Ranveer has been given strict instructions by Yash Raj to lie low and not make any public appearance.

They normally keep the meetings very discreet. Ranveer is a very ambitious guy and keeps discussing movies and his career with Anushka. He is very fond of her.”

However, Anushka’s official spokesperson says, “There is no element of truth in this at all.” However, our source maintains that Anushka and Ranveer are very much a couple at the moment.

Yash Raj's latest offering Badmaash Company has something exciting for everyone. A film based on four individuals who get on the wrong side of law and start their own company indeed goes by an apt title.

Now, the latest is that Imtiaz Ali is on Yash Raj Films priority list for a movie with him. According to our sources, YRF is pretty impressed with Imtiaz's track record and they see him as a potential director who can deliver a sure shot hit.

It's also known that feelers are being sent to Imtiaz to do a film with Yash Raj Camp. Though, Imtiaz has already a few film assignments to complete before committing to any new film projects, it would be interesting to see Imtiaz Ali joining hands with the country's top most film production house.

The film ‘Badmaash Company’ is set in the background of 1990s in which four youngsters from middle class families in Mumbai, are in a bid to earn quick bucks. They thus decide to start a company.

Their company became instantly well-known and they started benefiting financially just because of the fact that they have found a way to beat the system.

The film is written by Parmeet Sethi, who will also be making his directorial debut with the film. Film also features actor-comedian Vir Das and Indian Idol participant Meiyang Chang as 'Badmaash.'

The music for the film has been composed by Pritam and is produced by Aditya Chopra. he movie is set to hit the theaters on May 7.

Shahid’s timely action saved Anushka
According to reports, while shooting for a song, Shahid Kapur and Anushka were required to dance underneath a huge a chandelier that suddenly came crashing down on the duo.

However, Shahid acted quickly and pulled Anushka towards himself. His timely action saved the actress from getting seriously injured.

This is not the first time Shahid’s quick thinking has rescued his co-star, earlier he had saved his 'Kaminey' co-star Priyanka Chopra from falling off a scooter during the shoot.

Yes, it is the Neil Nitin Mukesh we talk of, and also, the Dhoom - 3. If the rumors are to be believed then Sanjay Gadhvi is being called back to Yash Raj Films for a second among sequels, a third project in the Doom franchise.





Sanjay Gadhiva was seen last week with Yash Raj's current blue eyed boy. According to news, Neil who is very close to the YRF folks had managed to convince Aditya Chopra to let Gadhvi take over the implementation of Dhoom 3. Neil is very keen on being part of this sequel and Aditya has assured him a worthy role in the movie.





Among other options is the possibility that Aditya Chopra direct Dhoom 3 himself, a thoght that he is happy to explore. Like every other actor associated with Yash Raj, Shah Rukh Khan also wants to be part of this franchise.





Neil on his part claims he would look forward to being a part of this project, whoever the director. As for YRF, whether or not for Dhoom 3, he will be pursuing future ventures with the production house. Currently, the young actor is working on Yash Raj's Lafange Parinde.





If things as per plans, Dhoom 3 is likely to go on the floors by the end of this year or early next year.

Uday Chopra who used to flaunt his biceps in all his films so far had to shed his real macho look for this film. In fact he had to lose weight and sport glasses to play this nerdy character in Pyaar Impossible.

Pyaar Impossible is actor-turned-director Jugal Hansraj’s second commercial film after the animation flick Roadside Romeo. Actor Uday Chopra has turned producer with this film. He has also written the script of this film. Together they team up for a promising film.

'Pyaar Impossible' is not an exaggerated love story: Jugal Hansraj

Q. It was Aditya Chopra who persuaded you to direct your first film - the animation 'Roadside Romeo'. How did 'Pyaar Impossible' happen?
After 'Roadside Romeo' was finished, my best friend and actor Uday Chopra came to me with the script he had penned down. I liked the script. Uday, who was planning to produce the movie, then asked if I would direct it. I said yes and in no time we had started shooting. The only thing that took a while was Priyanka Chopra's approval. She was busy and took around two months to give her nod.

Q. After an animation movie, were you apprehensive about directing a movie with real people?
The technicalities are the same for both. The camera angles and the production values do not differ. With real people, there is more scope for spontaneity which is lacking in an animation film. And sketching out animated characters takes longer but with good actors your task is cut out.

Q. Having worked with Yash Raj Films earlier must have made the process easier, right?
Definitely. With YRF, you are sure to get guidance from all quarters. Aditya was always there with his inputs which made life easy for me. Karan Johar also gave his inputs during the making of the movie and as well as after seeing the rushes.

Q. The love story of a geek and a beauty has been heard and seen earlier. How differently have you told it?
I know that we have heard it in fairytales. But this movie is more conversational and not with heavy dialogues. It is not an exaggerated love story, but a simple one where people go through different emotions.

Q. How come you haven't considered acting lately?
Acting has always ranked way above everything else for me. I would love to get back to acting as soon as I possibly can. Soon after the release of 'Pyaar Impossible', I will start considering a few scripts.

Q. While you were an actor, did you ever think of turning to other aspects of filmmaking?
I did not. All I wanted to do was act. It was Aditya who after seeing my obsession with animation films, asked me to direct YRF's first.

Q. What's next on the agenda?
I'm always raring to work. But I guess I will have to wait a bit after the release of 'Pyaar Impossible' because we haven't finalised anything so far

Will Ranbir play Deepika’s son

A film called Rab Rakha Te Jag Rakha starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor and directed by Yash Chopra may not materialize at all.

There have been some differences between Chopra and the writer of the film and he is not keen to part with the rights to Chopras. Even Karan Johar has shown interest in the project, but the writer is not keen to give him the script unless Karan promises to direct it himself.

Incidentally the script has a sequence where Ranbir Kapoor plays Deepika Padukone’s son.
